Bridal Build Day - Blair Schleicher-Wilson, Morris County Habitat for HumanityThere may be a new trend among some modern brides -- making humanitarian gestures part of their wedding celebrations.

“Couples are becoming more altruistic, but it is not a trend for trend’s sake, it’s more how couples let their personalities shine through,” said Erik Kent, co-publisher of NJWedding.com. “Those who choose to use their wedding to give back can do so in a big way,” he added.

Blair Schleicher-Wilson, executive director of Morris County’s Habitat for Humanity, was inspired to give back after reading a June article in The Star-Ledger about one altruistic bride.

Schleicher-Wilson was moved to build after reading about Lisa VanDerMeiren, a 27 year old Mount Holly resident who, with her bachelorette party in tow, helped build a Raritan Valley Habitat for Humanity home in Franklin Township, Somerset County. Schleicher-Wilson and her staff decided to do the same thing in Morris County this summer.

Schleicher-Wilson, a new bride herself, recently announced that Morris County’s Habitat for Humanity (MCHH) will hold it’s first ever “Bridal Build Day,” from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Saturday, August 22, at 1 Lloyd Ave. in Stanhope.

“Many couples never really work together in this kind of environment. We suspect that couples coming out to build together may find that, like a corporate team build, sometimes roles and responsibilities are reversed and a new understanding and respect is gained from the overall experience. This may be a really helpful thing as couples begin their new life together,” said Schleicher-Wilson.

Future brides may attend the event with their fiancés, their bridal parties or families and friends. Those who participate in the event will help frame a four-plex home, Schleicher-Wilson said.
